My journey to Arena Physica combined hardware engineering and computational electromagnetics. Before joining Arena Physica, I worked as a Hardware Engineer at Apple, and I earned my PhD from Purdue University in computational electromagnetics (CEM). At Apple, the majority of my job was to use different EDA tools with computational EM solvers built in them, to perform simulation and extract circuit parameters for further transient simulation. That work taught me how important it is to have an efficient and accurate CEM solver in the electronic design industry.
Today, I’m a Research Scientist in computational electromagnetics at Arena Physica. I currently focus on CEM solver research, building and optimizing for high performance and high fidelity EM data generation for Arena Physica’s EM foundation model.
As a PhD in CEM, I still hold great enthusiasm for what I have studied. In addition, as LLMs play an increasingly important role in both life and work, the topic of integrating AI/ML with EM for the next generation of CEM solvers caught my attention. Arena Physica provided a perfect opportunity for me to contribute using my background knowledge, and to explore this frontier.
Classical EM solvers provide accurate solutions, but they are time consuming, especially when complicated 3D structures are involved. The fast advance of AI/ML provides opportunities for next generation CEM solvers, where EM simulators leverage ML for computation acceleration, and where EM data generation feeds an EM foundation model. I am really excited about all the potential in this frontier!
One of my favorite memories is from my first week, at our #shipped meeting, where we all share what we have shipped that week. I introduced myself, gave my hot take, and interacted with colleagues from across the company. I was really impressed by the culture at Arena Physica, how talented my colleagues are, and all the diverse discussions we had.
My advice for anyone interested in working here: if you like deep academic exploration, cutting edge next generation CEM and EDA solutions, and innovative work with a real sense of self fulfillment, it is a good idea to reach out to Arena Physica. This is a really good opportunity for integrating ML, computational mathematics and physics, and your academic research capabilities.
And in classic Arena Physica tradition, here’s my hot take: AI will make us have less critical thinking. I’ve seen many people over-rely on AI for their daily work and tasks, though I also agree that AI has significantly increased my own work efficiency. Maybe the way we use AI is the most important factor of all.
